In November of 1977 or 1978 I went to Honolulu for the first time. One of the popular songs on the radio was "Honolulu City Lights" and it became my theme song. I was on vacation and had coordinated it with a concert by Gordon Lightfoot (whom I knew from my hometown) whom I knew from my hometown.
t the Waikiki Shell I saw Cecilio and Kapono but didn't know them at the time but soon sought out their music to add to my collection. Needless to say, I ended up purchasing many LP's including the Beamer Brothers, Kalapana and Olomana all of which I still love to listen to.
On another visit to Honolulu, (I went 3 times in 18 months looking for a job) I met a wonderful man and experienced the classic walk along the beach at Waikiki under a full moon, falling in love even though I shouldn't have and being completely spellbound by Hawaii.
Local shopkeepers became my friends and took me to the "local" places and I knew I would have to return as often as possible. Although the romance ended I still loved Hawaii.
Many years later, I got married and moved to Texas and for our 15th wedding anniversary we went to Honolulu. We had a wonderful time and revisited places I loved and shared with him. We even saw Olomana and brought pictures to share of younger days when everyone had more hair!
I keep saying I want to retire in Hawaii, I may not be able to afford it but I can dream can't I?
When that happens, I will never have to yearn for the "Honolulu City Lights" again.
Aloha,
Nancy in Texas.
