My most memorable Hawaiian music moment would have to be the time I met Raymond Kane at his home in Nanakuli. It was by a freak accident that this happened. I was on my way from Ma'ili to Kaimuki to shop and sat next to the nicest elderly Hawaiian lady. Can't remember her name any more because it was about 10 years ago. We started talking and laughing all the way to Kaimuki and ended up having coffee and donuts together.
Decided to go back to Nanakuli to go to the beach and stopped at her house on Hawaiian homestead to get her bathing suit. We're walking back to her house and she is saying Aloha to everyone she sees. Then she says to me "That is my next door neighbor, you mind if we go up to talk to her?" Of course I said, no problem. It turned out to be Elodia Kane and she invited us both inside, where I noticed right away a huge photo of Raymond hanging on the wall in the front room. He did come out and introduce himself to me. We ended up having lunch with Elodia in the little studio apartment that they have in their garage. What a wonderful day that turned out to be for me and I will never forget the true Aloha the two of them had.
Mr. Kane will be greatly missed by all. So sad to have lost two Hawaiian Legends in two days time. Auntie Genoa Keawe was another one that was unforgettable. Saw her at the open bar at the Hawaiian Regent. I took a newcomer from the Mainland there to entertain her and we got more than we expected. Tony Conjugation was in the audience and he came up to perform, along with two elderly sisters who were Kuma Hulas. What an amazing show that was, and all it cost us was a few drinks and tips. I know that I will always remember these two Hawaiian music moments for ever, even though I did not hear Raymond Kane perform the day I met him, I did eventually get to hear him play in concert.
I sadly moved back to the Mainland to live and have hated it every day that I have been here!
