Aloha,
My first experience with Hawaiian music was when my parents brought home Don Ho albums.
I was in grade 3 and in the summer I would put on my grass skirt we found at a garage sale and I'd make skirts for my students out of dark green garbage bags hmmmm.
In Vancouver BC we don't have access to the beautiful plant life that you have in Hawaii. I loved the music so much I taught my friends and whoever else wanted to learn. Not sure where I thought I had learned hula from ?????
When I was in my 20's I joined a hula halau in BC and have danced ever since.
I listen to Hawaiian105 KINE on the Internet at work all day so many songs take me out of cold wet Vancouver and into that tropical paradise.
Ahhhhh I listen to a mix of Hawaiian music in my car all the time. They're the only cd's in my car :). I would really love it if you had a request line on the Internet. I would really love to hear some of Kealoha Kalama's music "Pohai Kealoha" would be great to hear. Well I could go on forever but I'll go...
Aloha and maholo nui Loa for all the great music Please keep it goin'!
Sandy M.
PS - here's a picture of me and my Hula sisters with Robert Cazimero in Vancouver B.C.
