A Forum for Better Alternatives to Ala Wai Flood Mitigation Project
October 29, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeProtect Our Ala Wai Watersheds presents “A Forum for Better Alternatives to Ala Wai Flood Mitigation Project” at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse, 2nd floor Diamond Head Ballroom.
This two-hour forum will have seven presentations, and many tables with information on alternative plans to the proposed USACE traditional plan of detention basins on the valley streams and a 4’ – 6’ wall along the entire length of the Ala Wai, as well as work that is currently being done in the streams to clean and monitor the water so that it can flow cleanly to the sea.
Come and learn
- How the invasive albizia in the mountains affects the Ala Wai canal.
- How the Genki Ala Wai Project aims to remove sludge and clean the waters of the Ala Wai Canal by using low-cost, environmentally-safe bioremediation technology based on Effective Microorganisms®.
- How oysters are nature’s filters and cleaners
- How the schools in the Ala Wai area all band together to do stream clean up and monitoring.
- How canoe clubs pick up trash in the Ala Wai, Waikīkī Bay and Māmala Bay
- How softer, more eco-friendly methods such as bio-swales and permeable surfaces can help to absorb our sudden rainfalls.
Come and see
- How a 4’ wall all along the two mile long Ala Wai canal might look.
- The sixteen canoe clubs that paddle in the Ala Wai.
- Why simply dredging the Ala Wai Canal is not the answer.
