ABOUT HENRY KAPONO’S ARTIST 2 ARTIST SERIES
The launch of this new format will continue to feature multiple award-winning and GRAMMY® nominee, Henry Kapono, who will introduce a new opening segment that will spotlight many of Hawai`i’s diverse and talented musical entertainers, followed by some of Hawai`i’s most iconic musicians. Henry will “jam” and “talk story” one-on-one with each artist, “deconstructing” their career (as only one artist to another can do) to give the audience insight to the spirit and aspirations of the person/people behind the music.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
MAUNALUA
Formed in 1993, Maunalua consists of the talented Bobby Moderow, Jr., Kahi Kaonohi, and Richard Gideon. With the release of their first album in 2000, “Maunalua,” they were immediately recognized for their tight harmonies that are accentuated by Moderow’s falsetto and prowess with slack key guitar. The release promptly won the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Hawaiian Album of the Year. Since then, and four releases later, the group has gained multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including highly notable Group of the Year and Favorite Entertainer of the Year (an award won by votes from the public). Maunalua is certainly a favorite with audiences in Hawaiʻi, the continental U.S., and internationally. They are known for their exuberant, entertaining performances that are animated, energetic, and cheerful, ranging from fun, high energy songs to sweet, soulful ballads, interspersed with banter between the three group members and the audience. Maunalua is a highly sought after act that never disappoints.
KAMAKAKĒHAU FERNANDEZ
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, a 6-week old African American infant was adopted and brought to the shores of Maui, Hawaiʻi. It is here that his new family and home shaped Kamakakēhau (Kamaka) Fernandez into one of Hawaiʻi’s refreshing talents. Kamaka’s education played a huge part in his love and appreciation for Hawaiian culture and music and now shares this as an educator teaching Hawaiian language, ’Ukulele and many other skills to do with Hawai’i’s culture in effort to keep Hawai’i’s language alive and thriving. A fluent speaker of the Hawaiian language he provided voiceover work for the Hawaiian language version for Disney’s feature film “Moana”, has won several local music competitions, and his debut solo album “Wahi Mahalo” won the 2013 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Music Award for EP Album of the year. Kamaka is recognized for having a Hawaiian heart and soul and has great respect for his Hawaiian upbringing, as well as his African American roots.
